Once we left Canyon de Chelly, we were off to Hubbell Trading Post and to see some of the sites around Window Rock. First we went to Hubbell Trading Post. Briefly a bit about John Hubbell. He was one of the most respected and well known Navajo traders of his day. He was known for his honesty in business dealings, for his hospitality, and for his wise counsel to the Navajo. John Hubbell and his sons owned 30 trading posts, the majority were located within the Navajo Nation.
This is a photo of the trading post itself. There are several buildings on this property, and this page has photos of most of them. In front of the trading post is one of John Hubbell's freight wagons. It is a bit hard to see in the picture, but you get the idea.
This is a picture of the 'EDGE-lings' standing in front of the 'Guest Hogan' on the trading post property. A 'Hogan' is the traditional Navajo home. It was round or polygonal shape, either 6 or 8 sided.
This is a photo of the 'bread oven'. Guess what this was used for!!
This is a photo of the barn on the property.
This photo is of the rear of the Hubbell home, and the wareroom extension.
The photo was taken in the corral. As you can see there was a lot of old farm equipment for us to look at. Grandpa was able to identify every single thing!!! He remembers using similar equipment when he was growing up on the farm.
The barn was open with limited access for us to wonder inside. This was a perfect spot to take a group photo.
After leaving Hubbell Trading Post, we made our way to Window Rock. Window Rock is the capitol of the Navajo Nation. The EDGE-lings are seated in front of the rock formation that was the inspiration for the town's name. We also visited a museum in Window Rock. In the museum there was a section devoted to the Navajo Code Talkers. The movie 'Windtalkers' was released just prior to our trip, so the exhibit was a very timely and interesting stop in our visit to the Navajo Nation. Just briefly, the Code Talkers were Navajo Marines who developed for the military, a secret code based on the Navajo language.
Once we left Window Rock we headed for Gallup, New Mexico where we spent the night at a KOA. This was a very nice RV park. It had all the amenities that one could want with an RV. By the way, notice the smokey sky. We were going to be heading in the direction of the smoke from the horrific Arizona fires of this past summer.
